This paper reviews evidence that listeners adapt to the reverberation in a room. Results show that reverberation degrades perception of source direction, but with experience in a given room, performance improves. Reverberation enhances distance perception but distance accuracy still improves with experience. (The importance of reverberation for distance perception can be heard in the accompanying demonstration.) These results are considered along with results from previous studies investigating how past experience affects spatial perception. Implications for learning mechanisms and for the design of auditory displays are discussed.

Perceptual Consenqueces of including Reverberation in Spatial Auditory Displays

This paper evaluates the perceptual consequences of including reverberation in spatial auditory displays for rapidly-varying signals (obstruent consonants). Preliminary results suggest that the effect of reverberation depends on both syllable position and reverberation characteristics. As many of the non-speech sounds in an auditory display share acoustic features with obstruent consonants, the...

Speech Intelligibility, Spatial Unmasking, and Realism in Reverberant Spatial Auditory Displays

Many auditory displays strive to include accurate directional spatial cues, but few provide robust cues for source distance. This paper considers how including echoes and reverberation in a spatial auditory display (in order to create salient cues for source distance) impacts other aspects of performance, especially speech intelligibility and spatial unmasking. Preliminary results from masked s...

Identifying Where You Are in a Room: Sensitivity to Room Acoustics

In a spatial auditory display, reverberation provides a reliable cue for source distance, increases the subjective realism of the display, and improves the externalization of simulated sound sources. However, relatively little is known about perceptual sensitivity to differences in reverberation patterns or how precisely reverberation must be simulated in a spatial auditory display. This paper ...

Investigating the performance of machine learning-based methods in classroom reverberation time estimation using neural networks (Research Article)

Classrooms, as one of the most important educational environments, play a major role in the learning and academic progress of students. reverberation time, as one of the most important acoustic parameters inside rooms, has a significant effect on sound quality. The inefficiency of classical formulas such as Sabin, caused this article to examine the use of machine learning methods as an alternat...

A binaural processor for missing data speech recognition in the presence of noise and small-room reverberation

In this study we describe a binaural auditory model for recognition of speech in the presence of spatially separated noise intrusions, under small-room reverberation conditions. The principle underlying the model is to identify time–frequency regions which constitute reliable evidence of the speech signal. This is achieved both by determining the spatial location of the speech source, and by gr...
